SEALINK PROJECT – BRIDGING NATIONAL AND REGIONAL TRANSPORT / LOGISTICS INFRASTRUCTURE GAP

BEING A PRESENTATION BY THE SEALINK CONSORTIUM / NIGERIAN FLEET IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE (NFIC)

The need to bridge transport infrastructure gap among member states along the ECOWAS trade corridor, especially against the backdrop of;

  • Growth of intra-ECOWAS trade over the past decade from 4.7 million tonnes to over 13.2 million tonnes without corresponding increase in transport infrastructure.
  • Improving Nigeria’s value-added / manufactured exports, currently at bout 15% contribution to total non-oil exports receipts

Frequent cargo losses arising from long transit period / delivery delays due to trans-shipment arrangements

The need to promote / enhance it’s regional trade percentage contribution and reduce informal trade - Intra-ECOWAS trade has stagnated at about 12% - 15% over the years

Facilitation of bulk cargo logistics / exports arrangements through inland waterways operations to bridge infrastructure gaps e.g. exports of million tonnages of solid minerals and other bulk cargoes.

The need to reduce high transportation / logistics costs that would enhance efficiency, competitiveness and trade connectivity, thereby improving the current low national / regional Logistics Performance Index (LPI) and Ease of Doing Business

LPI is an international comparison tool that measures trade logistics performance / trade transport facilitation friendliness. Nigeria is currently ranked 90 out of 160 countries at 2.63, which is below World average of 2.78
